What to say about your chimney sweep services, credentials and seasonality

A guide to wording your chimney sweep service list, the WETT or CSIA credential to name, regional seasonality, and how to handle reviews and referrals.

What to take away

  • Your service list should name flue types and appliancesopen fireplace, wood stove, gas insert, oil furnace vent, pellet appliance. "Chimney sweeping" alone brings calls you cannot take.
  • WETT certification is the credential Canadian homeowners search for by name. Put the certificate level and inspector name on the page, not a badge image alone.
  • Price per flue and per appliance, not per house. A two-flue bungalow and a cottage with a wood stove and an oil vent are different jobs.
  • Cottage and chinook seasonality decides when you buy ads. Muskoka work books in spring; prairie work bunches around freeze-up and warm spells.
  • Every quote should state what you do not do. Creosote ignition risk, firebox cracks and venting defects go to a WETT-certified technician, not to a marketing page.

Why a generic sweep page fails

A homeowner searching for a sweep is usually solving one of three problems. The flue needs cleaning, an insurer or a sale requires an inspection, or something smells or draws wrong.

Those are three different jobs with three different prices. A page that says "professional chimney sweeping, fully insured, call today" answers none of them.

The fix is not more words. It is naming the appliance, the fuel, and the certificate.

Name the work, not the trade

Write the service list the way a dispatcher would read it out.

Service list by appliance

  • Open fireplace woodsweep, smoke chamber, damper
  • Wood stove or insertflue sweep, baffle, gasket
  • Gas applianceno sweeping, inspection and referral
  • Oil furnace ventsweep and inspection, soot noted
  • Pellet applianceflue and vent sweep, ash

Name the work

  • Open fireplace, wood-burningsweep, smoke chamber, damper check.
  • Wood stove or insertflue sweep, baffle and gasket condition noted.
  • Gas applianceno sweeping. Inspection and referral only.
  • Oil furnace ventsweep and inspection, with the soot and scale noted separately.
  • Pellet applianceflue and vent sweep, ash handling.

Each line carries a different time estimate and a different price basis. A reader comparing three sweeps in one city can tell within seconds which one handles their appliance.

This is also where you state what you decline. Sweeping is not inspection, and inspection is not repair. Say so on the page, in one sentence, and the wrong calls stop arriving.

Credentials a homeowner can check

In Canada, WETT certification is the term homeowners and insurers use. It comes in levels, and the level decides what work a technician may sign off.

Name the level, the technician, and the certifying body. A badge with no name is decoration.

For the United States, the equivalent search term is a CSIA-certified sweep. Name the certification the way your customers search for it, not the way your trade association writes it.

NFPA 211 sets the clearance and inspection standard both countries' technicians work to. You do not need to explain it on a marketing page. You need to say that your inspection follows it, and that clearance questions go to the local fire authority.

Pricing that survives a phone call

Quote per flue and per appliance. A single rate for "a chimney sweep" guarantees a dispute on the second flue.

Set the numbers from your own costs. The arithmetic is hours on site times your hourly rate, plus travel, plus the share of callbacks you absorb. If you do not know your callback rate, that is the first number to find.

State the callback policy in the quote. A sweep that returns for free twice on the same flue is a loss, and the customer should know which returns are covered.

Seasonality by region

Alberta and the prairies bunch around freeze-up and chinooks. A warm spell in January produces a run of "my chimney is smoking" calls, and those calls do not wait.

Regional booking seasons

  1. Prairies
    Freeze-up and chinooks
  2. Prairies
    January warm spell smoking calls
  3. Atlantic
    Damp season, creosote and moisture
  4. Muskoka
    Spring booking before season
  5. Muskoka
    Fall close-up bookings

Atlantic Canada adds damp. Creosote and moisture together mean more callbacks if the sweep is rushed.

Muskoka and cottage country run on a different clock. Owners book in spring before the season, and again in fall when they close up. Advertising in July to that market buys you nothing.

Match spend to the calendar you already know from your own booking log. If you have three years of bookings, you have the seasonality data. Use it instead of a national average.

Reviews, referrals and the FTC line

Ask after a completed service, ask everyone, and do not gate the request to customers you expect to praise you. The FTC's guide on soliciting and paying for online reviews sets out why selective asking and incentives create a misleading picture.

The same applies to any claim on your site. The FTC's advertising FAQs for small business cover substantiation and endorsement disclosure. "Best sweep in the city" needs support you probably do not have.

Referrals from realtors, insurers, and home inspectors are the other half. Define what you will and will not take from each. A realtor who needs a fast pre-sale inspection is a good fit. A realtor who needs a defect quietly signed off is not.

A worked example: the two-flue bungalow

A homeowner calls about "a chimney sweep." The house has one masonry flue serving an open fireplace and one serving a gas furnace.

Two-flue bungalow job

  1. Call about a chimney sweep
  2. Gas flue: inspect, refer if defect
  3. Masonry flue: sweep, record creosote
  4. High creosote: stop, inspect, refer
  5. Quote: sweep, inspect, callback policy

The gas appliance is not swept. It is inspected, and if the venting shows a defect, it goes to a WETT-certified technician and possibly the gas fitter.

The masonry flue is swept. Creosote level is recorded. If the level is high enough that a rotary rod will not clear it safely, the job stops and becomes an inspection and referral.

The quote has three lines: sweep one flue, inspect one appliance, and a stated callback policy. The customer knows the price before you arrive, and you know the job before you book it.

Common questions

Do I need to be WETT certified to market as a sweep?

Sweeping and inspection are separate scopes, and what a technician may sign off depends on certification level. Requirements and the scope of each level are set by the certifying body and, for some work, the provincial regulator. Confirm your own scope before you advertise it.

Can I advertise in Quebec without French?

Quebec's language rules, including Bill 96, affect commercial advertising and public signage. The specifics depend on your business structure and where you operate. Confirm with Revenu Québec and a qualified lawyer before you run a campaign there.

How do I price a first-time customer with no history?

Price per flue and per appliance from your own hours and travel, then state the callback policy. If you have no callback history yet, track it from the first month. The number you need is the share of jobs that require a return visit.

What should never appear on a sweep marketing page?

Anything that reads as diagnosis or repair instruction. Creosote ignition risk, firebox cracks and venting defects belong with a WETT-certified technician, NFPA 211, and the local fire authority. Your page names the service, the credential, and the next step.
